“It's a movie, like Little Miss Sunshine, that aims to put the fun back in dysfunction. And it does.”

Frank & Cindy

Frank And Cindy

Directed by G.J. Echternkamp

(73 min) USA

The documentary, Frank and Cindy is a direct cinema look into the lives of two unusual--and dare one say--loveable souls, as viewed through the keen eye  (and viewfinder) of Cindy's son, G.J.,  filmmaker, actor and funny, jangle-jointed dancer in those funny, unfunny commercials.

Frank is a former lead singer in a boy rock band; Cindy is his wife and G.J. is her son. How they all get along is a study in mayhem that is both loving and disgusting. As Cindy pursues a fix for her bad teeth and subsequent dreams of a fine job--and Frank drinks--everything crumbles, until Frank, vulgar and harsh, steps up, sort-of, to reveal love, buried over twenty-years in the abyss of substance abuse. Filmmaker G.J. persists in the literal face-to-face of one of the oddest and most interesting couples one could find. anywhere. And, yes, the filmmaker makes his film, but can the filmmaker's life, which should be warped as old plywood, keep on dancing?
