“Too hard-headed a movie to be a sentimental tribute to the persecuted little guy with integrity in a cold, corrupt world. Like all of Mr. Kaurismaki's films, it tempers its lyricism with an undertone of gallows humor, more muted here than in earlier films, but still palpable.” |

Lights In The Dusk (Laitakaupungin valot)Directed by Aki KaurismäkiCast: Janne Hyytiäinen, Maria Järvenhelmi(78 min) Finland Lights In The Dusk concludes the so-called “loser trilogy” begun by Drifting Clouds and The Man Without a Past. Koistinen is a night watchman who unwittingly falls for a woman tied to criminal elements that aim to exploit his position for a robbery. Koistinen takes the blame, loses his job, and seems to abandon his hopes for romance. If this all sounds bleak, it isn’t entirely. Kaurismäki manages to invest his characters with surprising warmth in this serio-comic portrait of an outsider who perseveres despite his limited prospects. Lights has played at numerous international film festivals, including in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival of 2006.
