T

he Rest is Silence shows the further development of the exciting and innovative films from contemporary Romanian cinema, albeit in a completely different vein than the mini-dv rough style of recent exports such as 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days. Produced for $4 million, the largest budget ever for a Romanian film, The Rest is Silence tells of the historically true story of the struggle to make the epic The Independence of Romania which pre-dated the American D.W. Griffith's efforts to expand the scale and prestige of the feature film with The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance. The Rest is Silence achieves a bigger than life film done on an epic scale that is truly mesmerizing. A must for film buffs but accessible to all. As Variety says, "Less a biopic than a romantic period dramedy about the eternal conflict between business and art, Silence can be enjoyed with no knowledge of the real story."
